From MYP to IB DP: Transitioning Smoothly and Standing Out

For students who are moving from the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) to the Diploma Programme (IB DP), the change may be exciting but also daunting. This can be seen in the hope that the IB DP can provide a highly respected global qualification. However, the IB DP also brings significantly more work and more expectations, and academic rigor.

Therefore, in this blog, we will outline what students should expect, how to prepare themselves, and how to be able to not just survive the IB DP, but excel.

What’s the Difference Between MYP and DP?

The MYP (grades 6–10) encourages students to think about ideas, explore connections, be critical thinkers, and make thoughtful reflections about their learning. It is inquiry-based and concept-driven. This helps students to make connections across the MYP subjects.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) (grades 11–12) is more academically rigorous and focuses on preparing students for university. The DP has changed significantly from the MYP. The IB DP includes:

Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL) subject choices

  • Extended Essay (EE)
  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

The MYP programme builds solid research skills and interdisciplinary thinking and with the DP, there is a bigger jump in expected independence, time management, and depth of study.

Academic Skills You’ll Need for the IB DP

To build a seamless transition, practice developing the three academic skills outlined below in MYP.

Essay Writing & Research

You will need to learn how to build an argument and support it with evidence.

  • You will need to learn how to properly cite sources (MLA or APA).
  • You will need to practice reflective writing (to help you in your TOK and EE) to assess your own thinking process.

Time Management

  • The IBDP course has a great deal of materials, but doesn’t require a huge commitment outside of class. Start organizing your work using dot planners or apps like Notion or Trello.
  • You should break large tasks (like the EE or IA) into shorter milestones in order to avoid panic at the last minute.

Critical Thinking

  • All DP assessments emphasize critical thinking, especially TOK and English, by giving marks to those students who already demonstrate perspective-taking, lack of assumptions, and thoughtful argument.

Subject-Specific Skills

  • Start assessing what you can already do well in your MYP subjects so you can make informed HL/SL decisions.
  • You will want to recap any content that relies on academic vocabulary and exam techniques for any MYP subjects that you plan to take as HL.

Choosing the Right Subjects: Think Strategically

Your DP subject choices should represent:

  • Your academic strengths and interests
  • Your future career or plans for university
  • Balance (don’t overload with too many HLs in order to look good)

For Example:

  • Interested in medicine? Choose HL Biology and Chemistry.
  • Interested in law or the humanities? Choose HL History, and/or English, and/or Global Politics.

Remember: It is better to do well in a balanced mix of subjects than to struggle through an overly ambitious course load.

Standing Out in the IB DP

Although the DP is challenging, it also provides many areas to shine:

Extended Essay (EE): Dive In

You have to pick a real topic you are interested in and make a good quality, good research product. A good EE can:

  • Work as a differentiator in your college applications
  • Demonstrate academic interest and self-discipline

TOK: Make Connections

Don’t underestimate TOK. Participate actively in discussions and develop connections between personal experience and the world outside your school. A thoughtful TOK essay or presentation will apply the same level of reasoning to make a lasting impression on students and universities.

CAS: Be Meaningful

Select CAS activities related to things you like and wish to pursue in the future. While volunteering, learning to play music, heading a club, CAS is an opportunity to:

  • Develop leadership qualities
  • Contribute to the community meaningfully
  • Demonstrate personal growth

Demonstrated Timely Stages of Growth

Academic resilience is a quality all universities value. Even if you started off in a downward spiral, demonstrate continuous cognition and maturity throughout the DP – the exact indicators of cognitive growth.
